Facilities Custodian

​The Facilities Custodian assists assists all areas of the Preserve with custodial care and building maintenance projects. The Facilities Custodian may assist the Facilities Director and Facilities Tradesperson with other, non-building related projects as needed and assigned. All tasks are performed according to the Preserve’s strategic plan and in alignment with our vision, mission, and core values. It is a year-round, 32 hours per week position. Some flexibility in scheduling and occasional weekend duty is required. All scheduling is subject to the discretion of the Facilities Director.

Seasonal Positions

 

Seasonal Gardener(s) at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden

The Seasonal Gardeners are responsible for assisting daily ornamental plant maintenance at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden. These positions may assist with the plant production and garden maintenance activities at the McAlpin Farm and Greenhouse property. The positions are supervised by the Manager of McAlpin Farm and Abby Garden, directed by the Lead Gardener. Positions can range in duration from 3 to 6 months, 24- to 40-hour work week, non-exempt (hourly) position. Weekend and evening hours may be required during the nine weeks that the Abby Garden is open.

Seasonal Groundskeeper at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden

The Seasonal Groundskeeper assists the Lead Groundskeeper with the landscape maintenance at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden (Abby Garden) and the McAlpin Farm properties. This is a three- month seasonal position, maximum of 40 hours per week, non-exempt (hourly) position. Weekend and evening hours may be required during the nine-weeks that the Abby Garden is open.

Seasonal Gardener at Asticou Azalea Garden

The Seasonal Gardener is primarily responsible for assisting with the landscape maintenance at the three-acre Asticou Azalea Garden, reporting directly to the Azalea Garden Manager. At times, this crew member will collaborate with other projects throughout the Land & Garden Preserve. This is a non-exempt position that may range from 6-8 months in duration, 24-40-hour work week. Weekend and evening hours may be required.

Seasonal Gardener at McAlpin Farm

The Seasonal McAlpin Farm Gardener is responsible for assisting with the daily garden maintenance and plant production at the McAlpin Farm and Greenhouse complex. The complex has six thousand square feet of indoor growing space and a one-acre fenced outdoor growing space. The farm grows plants for the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden and Thuya Garden along with native plants for the Little Long Pond lands. This position is supervised by the Manager of McAlpin Farm and Abby Garden, directed at times by the McAlpin Farm Gardener. At times this position may lead, take instruction from, and/or collaborate with co-workers in garden maintenance activities. This is a 3- to 4-month, 24 to 40- hour per week, non-exempt (hourly) position. Weekend duty may be required for July and August.

Seasonal Groundskeeper at Thuya Garden

The Seasonal Groundskeeper is primarily responsible for assisting with all aspects of grounds  maintenance at Thuya Gardens.  This position will also support, as needed, the maintenance or special projects occurring on the 30-acre Thuya Property which includes Thuya Garden, Lodge, Asticou Terraces and Landing.  It is a public garden and thousands of visitors enjoy the property between the months of June and October.   This position is supervised by the Thuya Garden Manager but may take direction from the Head Gardener or Lead Groundskeeper. This is a four to six-month non-exempt (hourly) position, up to 40 hours per week. Flexible scheduling is required due to weather and weekend work.

Volunteer Opportunities

 

2020 Lands and Trails Volunteer Crew

If you are interested in helping out with our Lands and Trails volunteer projects in 2020 please e-mail the Preserve at info@gardenpreserve.org so we can add you to our list of volunteers.  A description of the volunteer projects is sent out weekly.

2020 Volunteers for the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden

Abby Garden volunteers interact with guests on public garden days to help direct them and answer questions about the history of the garden and grounds.  Training is provided for all volunteers.  If you are interested in volunteering at the Abby Garden next season, please contact Development Coordinator Whitney Ciancetta at wciancetta@gardenpreserve.org or 207-276-3727. 

2020 Volunteers for the Thuya Garden

The Preserve is starting a volunteer program at Thuya Garden beginning in June 2020. You will be greeting our visitors, sharing Thuya highlights and information about the Preserve. Volunteers will also collect visitation information. The volunteer schedule will be flexible. If you are interested, please email the Preserve at info@gardenpreserve.org.
