Policy for the Use of Photographs & Images

The Mount Desert Land & Garden Preserve (“the Preserve”) welcomes the taking of photographs and making of other images of the gardens and landscapes by our visitors for their own personal use and enjoyment. This policy is to protect the interests of the Preserve when it is represented in a photograph or other image accessible to the public and to reserve rights of reproduction for the Preserve or its designee.

General photography guidelines:
All photographs and other images taken by our visitors must be for their own personal use and enjoyment. Any use, reuse or reproduction by any means for commercial use is at the discretion of the Preserve and may only occur with the express written consent of the Preserve. All requests for use of images for commercial purposes will be considered on a case-by-case basis upon submission of an application. These guidelines will be posted on the Preserve website and in a prominent place on Preserve lands and at the gardens.

Criteria for Commercial Use of Photos and Images:

  • All requests for permission to use an image must include a copy of the image to be used.

  • Generally permission will be given for images to be used for educational purposes, such as in books, slide shows, lectures, institutional web sites, magazines and journals, educational video productions, or other learning environments.

  • Generally permission will be denied for use of images on cards, postcards, calendars, articles of clothing, posters, or other items to be sold to the public by entities other than the Preserve or its designee.

  • Permission for commercial use of photographs will be granted only when the purpose of the use is in alignment with the mission of the Preserve.

  • Generally permission will not be given for commercial photo shoots, such as clothing catalogs and other advertising media.

Due to health guidelines, all weddings and special events at the Preserve are on hold until further notice.

Asticou Azalea Garden, Thuya Garden, and the meadows at Little Long Pond will be available with reservations once pandemic restrictions are lifted. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden is not available for events or wedding photography.

General event guidelines:

  • Reservations must be made in advance.

  • The gardens and lands will remain open to the public during ceremonies.

  • No food or beverages may be consumed on the property.

  • Tents and other structures are not permitted.

  • A minimal number of chairs are allowed to accommodate the elderly and physically compromised. Chairs must be set up immediately before the ceremony and removed immediately following the ceremony.

  • When planning the length of the ceremony, remember that the majority of your guests will be standing.

  • Keep in mind there are no outdoor lights in the gardens, lands, or parking areas. Please plan the time of your event accordingly, especially in the fall.

  • Please begin and end promptly.

  • Alternative arrangements must be made in the event of inclement weather.

  • Photography is allowed as long as the photographers are respectful of vegetation, other visitors, and time.

  • A donation of $200 is requested to help maintain the lands and gardens.

Additional guidelines specific to the Asticou Azalea Garden:

  • Ceremonies involving 30 participants or fewer may take place any time during the season when the garden is open.

  • The North Lawn of the garden is recommended for ceremonies for its privacy and quiet. However, any location in the garden that does not interfere with vegetation is allowed.

  • Parking is limited. We recommend carpooling and parking some cars in the area on the west side of Rt. 198 at the intersection so that a few parking places remain available for regular visitors.

Additional guidelines specific to the Thuya Garden:

  • Ceremonies involving 15 participants or fewer may take place between July 1 and Labor Day when the garden is open.

  • Ceremonies involving 16 to 50 guests may only take place before July 1 or after Labor Day when the garden is open. Events involving more than 50 participants are not permitted.

  • Arrangements for shuttle vans or valet parking may be necessary as there is limited parking at the upper lot at Thuya.
