Restoration of the Sand Garden underway

Restoration work has begun on the tile border of the Sand Garden, with tiles to be reset and replaced as needed over the next few weeks. This project is the second of a planned series, with the resetting of the Moss Garden wall completed in early May. The wooden fence has been taken down, and footings poured, in preparation for a careful rebuild of the fence. Our new fence will stay true to the 1958 design with its graceful curve and the unique shadow box at the top. Later this fall the low stone wall behind the sand will be reset and leveled, and this will bring the lovely tile detail currently hidden in the wall back into view. The projects required to restore the Sand Garden are many, spanning two years, with the primary work taking place this fall. We could not be more thrilled to restore this valued feature back to the proportions and elements originally intended, including the many elements surrounding the viewing area across the stream. We are grateful to the generous donors whose support made this project possible.

Mary Roper, Asticou Azalea Garden Manager
